Step 1 - the sponsor must commit to sponsoring the child through primary school (7th grade). Once the sponsor is secured, Nafasi Project conducts a “home visit” to evaluate the living conditions of the Tanzanian family. This is how we determine if the child is in need of boarding or day school. 

Step 2 - In America, the sponsor will receive an invoice from Nafasi Project confirming their donation amount & payment plan. Meanwhile in Africa, we register the family with Nafasi Project, everyone signs a release form so that all the picture and information shared about them is with consent. Then we fill out school registration forms & take passport photos.

Step 3 - Once the American sponsor has paid their invoice, through PayPal or by check, Nafasi Project pays schools fees for the child in Tanzania. (Donations are tax deductible in the United States to the fullest extent of the law.) After that, Nafasi Project staff takes the child to be fitted for a school uniform. School supplies are purchased. If the student is attending boarding school, there is an additional one time payment of $50 usd used to buy boarding supplies: a mattress, mosquito nets, sheets, a blanket... and so on.  Sponsors are updated along the way with pictures of the shopping trip!

Step 4 - Once the student has been successfully enrolled in school. They are administered a placement test to determine what class best suits their education level. The sponsor will be notified of their results.

Step 5 - The first day of school! This is the most significant step for the sponsored child. Each child experiences this day in their own unique way. Some students are getting on the school bus for the first time, others are moving into their new dormitories. It is a monumental step in every family’s life. Nafasi Project accompanies each family along the way to facilitate as smooth a transition as possible. 

Sponsors will be updated twice a year on their students progress in school as well as updates on their families current situations. Sponsors are welcome to be as involved in their student’s life as they wish!

Nafasi Project's reach is growing, and we are grateful to be partnering with students and faculty at Rhode Island's Johnson & Wales University! Nafasi's founder, Emily Lyons, graduated from JWU and her work has made an impression on her former professors. We are so excited that they are getting current students involved with Nafasi's work! Last week, JWU students held a benefit concert for Nafasi Project. Pictured above is a presentation students put together about Nafasi to raise awareness at the concert. We are so proud of Nafasi Project's first graduate to be hired, Zainabu!
As part of our vocational skills training program, Zainabu has been studying as a tailor's apprentice for the past 2 years. We are so excited to announce that she has been hired full time by her former teacher! Seeing in her face how proud she is of her dresses makes all of our work worthwhile.

This is Fraisca, happy to be on her way to day care. She is 4 years old and will soon be old enough to attend nursery school. She is hoping to receive sponsorship so that she can enroll in one of Nafasi's partner English Medium schools. 
Fraisca is parented by her single dad, and lives with her grandmother. She loves to kick the soccer ball around with her friends after day care. Her favorite food is chapati (a typical type of bread in Tanzania). 
Fraisca and her family would really appreciate the opportunity for her to get an education and learn English. Nafasi project hopes to soon welcome Fraisca to our wonderful group of students.

Karibu (welcome) to our new Arusha, Tanzania office! It will serve as a space for us to maintain our documents and records, as well as to continue expanding Nafasi Project's work. It is a place where potential new students and their families can come to learn more about the sponsorship program. It will also be a safe space for our community engagement efforts, including groups we are in the process of forming. As we continue developing the office, we plan to have a play area to make it family friendly. This office has been a goal of ours for a while, and we are proud to say that we have accomplished it! We know that having this office will help Nafasi continue to grow and make a positive impact on our Tanzanian community.
